Study on common technical errors in central line placement published
In an article just published in
Journal of the American College of Surgeons (JACS), some of the mystery of learning by trials in placing subclavian lines was revealed. The most common technical errors observed were improper site for needle
insertion relative to the clavicle; insertion of the needle through the
clavicular periosteum; too shallow of a trajectory for the needle;
improper or inadequate anatomic landmark identification; aiming the
needle too cephalad; and inadvertent movement of the needle out of the
vein before or during wire placement. The lead author did his research rotation with the Research in Patient Safety group.
