"Catheters, infection, and videotapes"
That's the title of the editorial accompanying our paper in the May issue of Critical Care Medicine on video based training. Dr. Ricard of France commented that "regrettablly - I doubt that their videotapes will ever qualify for Cannes film festival."

Yan appointed as adjunct associate professor at UMBC's IS department
Yan was just appointed as adjunct appointment at UMBC's Informatioin System Department. The appointment should strengthen and formalize the close collaboratiion with the IS department.

Symposium on team performance measures at HFES
We will organize a symposium on team performance measures with presenters from University of Aberdeen, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Imperial College, Vanderbilt University and University of Maryland. The symposium was accepted recently to Human Factors & Ergonomics Society Annual Meeting, to be held in October in Baltimore.

Barbara finished her successul research visit
With one paper submitted and accepted at the premier human factors conference, Barbara finished her 3 -month stay. She contributed greatly to the team training project. We wish her luck in her PhD research in Zurich, and we will miss her.

Study of PICU rounds accepted for presentation at Human Factors & Ergonomics Conference
A short paper describing how a pediatric intensive care unit uses different artifacts to support communication was accepted for presentation. The work was written up by Danny Ho, a PhD student of UMBC. The observational study laid groundwork for the on-going technology development.

Whiteboard study paper accepted in Annals of Emergency Medicine
The accepted paper drew upon the findings of studies on the operating room whiteboard, and developed some general principles for improving communication in emergency departments through large shared displays, many of which are now electronic.

Boock chapter on distant leadership published
LEA just published the book on leadership when leaders are technologically connected with but separated from teams. One chapter reported a field experiment on trauma teams when the attending surgeon was remotely situated, conducted in the Shock Trauma Center in 2002. The experiment revealed the fluidity of team leadership in dynamic settings such as trauma.

Visualization of uncertainty for OR scheduling - paper accepted
Anesthesia & Analgesia just accepted a paper reporting on an experiment evaluating graphic displays. The displays represented uncertainties of scheduling for ORs in order to assist schedulers to optimize their decision making. The work was in collaboration with Dr. Dexter of University of Iowa and others.

Visit from Gudela Grote, March 12-13, 2007
Dr. Grote from Swiss Federal Institute of Technology will visit RPS. Gudela is professor and division head of organization, work and technology and a leading researcher on organizational design. She is collaborating with RPS on a team leadership project and on a coordination study project.

Lunch seminar on decision support and trust, 3/19/07
Dr. Poonima Madhavan from Carnegie Mellon University will visit RPS and give a lunch seminar on Monday, 3/19/07. Poornima is working on decision support strategies in diagnostic and monitoring tasks. She will describe experimental results on relationship between trust and reliability of automatic decision support systems.
