Aethon made second donation to support the activiites of the Division of Research in Patient Safety. It is very fitting that we see Aethon's robotic pharamcy carts rolling by daily in the hallway.

Dynamic delegation in trauma teams - Administrative Sciences Quarterly paper in print
Leadership in medical settings should be viewed as a "system" with components of delegation, hiearchy, distribution and changes. Reliable performance depends on the leadership system. Ensuring patient safety while fulfilling academic medicine’s training mission requires attendings and fellows to dynamically delegate leadership from moment to moment. These are some fo the findings of a paperin print in the premier journal of Administrative Science Quarterly (2006 December issue), and were part of a project funded by Army Research Institute (PI: Yan Xiao) with collaboration with Katherine Klein.

Architecture and Collaborative Work in Healthcare
The series
of workshops are organized to explore relationships between architecture and
collaborative work through information exchanges, site visits and open
presentations. The series is designed to build a bridge between healthcare,
human factors, and architecture, with the dual goal of designing safer care
environment while contributing to theories of collaborative work.

Successful first patient safety symposium
University of Maryland held the first patient safety symposium, with speakers and 47 poster presentations. The symposium was sponsored by Center for Advancement of Patient Safety at University of Maryland. The speakers and poster presenters were from Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Law, in addition to University of Maryland Medical Center.

Video based training more effective in improving sterile pratice in centraline insertions
A paper describing an AHRQ funded study by our group on the effectiveness of videobased training in improving compliance to sterile practices was recently accepted to publish in the journal Critical Care Medicine.

"Architecture week", Feb 26-28th
A series of intensive workshops will be held to explore relationships between architecture and collaborative work. Tentative dates are Monday - Wednesday, Feb 26-28th, 2007. Key events include presentations and site visits. Highlights of topics include the placement of OR whiteboards and layout of emergency departments and IMC.

Lunch seminar on team leadership, 1/31/07
Barbara Kuenzle, visiting from Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, will give a lunch seminar (1/31/07 Wednesday) on her PhD dissertation research on adaptive leadership based on videotaped anesthesia induction. She will present preliminary results as well as methodology used such as Survival
Analysis. Location is in our suite.

Twelve papers & abstracts have been accepted for publication and presentations in 2007
The papers were in press in Journal of Trauma, Administrative Science Quarterly, Cognition, Technology, and Work, and International Journal of Medical Informatics. Book chapter was published in a handbook on patient safety. Conference abstracts were accepted in American Telemedicine Association and World conference on Disaster Management. Patient Safety Symposium, January 30, 2007
The inaugural patient safety symposium, organized by CAPSUM, will be held in January 30, 2007, in Shock Trauma Auditorium. In addition to presentations by researchers around the campus, there will be a poster competition. Center for Advancement in Patient Safety at University Maryland (CAPSUM) was established to enhance the integration of research and education with care delivery and to enable multidisciplinary collaboration.

Opening of the Research Suite at Shock Trauma, 01/22/2007
Dr. Scalea will open the third floor new research suite at the Shock Trauma Center Building. The suite will house Divisions of Research in Patient Safety and Clinical and Outcomes Research. Lunch is served at 12:00noon, T3R85. Dr. Manser's presentation will follow.
